The Arts

The Association has used its strong roots within the local community to help deliver and increase the level of community involvement and participation within the Arts.

Arts activities are tied into the environmental, reconciliation, economic, cultural and social projects being promoted by the Association and every project has a significant Arts element. An Coire Arts Centre serves the population of Carntogher/Maghera and beyond with a wide range of arts and cultural activities.

  • Carntogher Arts Project

Since 2014/2015, Carntogher Community Association has successfully secured funding from Arts Council of NI & Mid Ulster District Council to deliver a range of bi-lingual Art activities and events as part of a specific Arts project to help establish and develop the Arts within the Carntogher area.

The project is now reaching a wider audience and past projects have provided a vast amount of opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to experience the Arts in many forms and also provided many Artists/Performers with a unique surrounding in which to express their artistic skills. Now firmly established as a Strategic Arts and Cultural Development partner by Mid Ulster District Council, Carntogher Community Association is recognised as a leading Arts provider within the council area.

We are the sole Arts and Cultural provider in the Mid Ulster Council area to have a completely bilingual Arts project, focussing on the importance of all forms of Arts and cultural activities.

To date some of the successful activities included:

    • A range of written, spoken and language Arts including storytelling, comic writing, animation, drama and music production workshops. We have worked with names like Myra Zepf (Children’s Writing Fellow for Northern Ireland), Beartla Ó Flatharta (Rós na Rún) to ensure our participants receive the highest possible standard of engagement in both Irish and English, unique to our Arts programme in Mid Ulster.
    • A well-established traditional Irish music school, where young people attend a week long music school, with 2 of the finest Irish traditional musicians in the area – (e.g. Liam Bradley – Beoga, Fintan Mulholland – Celtic Legends Dance Show) learning music of a specific touring band and then perform with them at the end of the course. Previous bands include: Moxie, Máirtín O’Connor Trio, Goitse, Kíla & The Paul McKenna Band. This is a very unique type of workshop – the only one of its kind in Ireland.
    • A range of visual Arts workshops including Paverpol, Wet felting, Contemporary landscape painting, Creative sewing and Fused glass workshops – giving participants the opportunity to learn from some of Ireland’s leading Artists.
    • Facilitating multiple drama and comedy performances from local and other touring drama groups such as Grimes & McKee, Pat Shortt, Kevin McAleer, Sole Purpose Productions, Kabosh Theatre Company, Aisteoirí Charn Tóchair & Granaghan Players to name a few.
    • The promotion of monthly music concerts, including support from local/emerging artists, followed by music sessions for aspiring musicians to be able to mix with seasoned professionals.

Information on the upcoming workshops and events can be found in Latest News and What’s on section of the site.
