Café Manager,   

This job provides an exciting and rare opportunity to manage an established and successful Café within one of the foremost Irish-language revival projects in Ireland – delivering important services in Irish at the heart of a growing Irish-speaking community. 

The Café operates within daytime opening hours with virtually no unsociable working-hour requirements.  The café does both in-house and outside catering and there would be opportunities to diversify and/or develop the business. 

Hours:                   Monday – Friday, 8am – 4pm (37.5 hours per week).

Salary:                   TBA, Negotiable – subject to experience.

Location:              An Croí, 132 Tirkane Road, Maghera, Co. Derry

An Croí, Maghera is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Café Manager to lead our rural community café and support the growth of this important social enterprise. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about hospitality, leadership, Irish Language and community development.

The job is ideal for someone who is a great leader, and keen to expand and develop new business opportunities and strengthen the café’s role as a welcoming bilingual hub for the local community and visitors.

An Croí Café is a vibrant social enterprise created by Coiste Forbartha Charn Tóchair. Since opening our doors in November 2018, we’ve become a welcoming hub in Carntogher, a place where great food, friendly faces, and a love for our local culture all come together.

We’re passionate about celebrating and promoting the Irish language, and we aim to offer a fully bilingual service for anyone who wants to use Irish, whether they’re fluent, learning, or just curious.

Manager overview

We are seeking a proactive and experienced person to manage the café and contribute to the overall success and growth of the café. The ideal candidate must be passionate about delivering exceptional customer service and have experience in hospitality.

Key responsibilities

  • Managing all aspects of daily work, including staff supervision, stock management and cash handling
  • Ensure excellent customer service
  • Schedule staff rota , training and performance management
  • Ensure compliance with all food hygiene, health and safety and licensing regulations
  • Oversee day-to-day procedures, including end of day finance report
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, food presentation and café appearance at all times
  • Support promotional and marketing activities to increase sales and customer engagement

 Personal specification

  • The candidate must be reliable, punctual and professional at all times. They must have a positive approach to work and display a commitment to delivering high standards of food and customer service
  • The candidate must also have a proven track record of successful supervision of a team

Essential criteria

  • Fluent in Irish or an advanced learner
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Good understanding of food safety, hygiene and health and safety practices
  • Experience in cash handling, stock control and daily reporting
  • Strong leadership skills, great communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility to work weekends, early mornings, and holidays as required in line with community initiatives

Desirable criteria

  • Previous experience in a supervisory role within a café, or hospitality setting
  • Food Hygiene Level 2 or higher
  • First aid or health and safety training
  • Barista training
  • Knowledge of marketing, promotions or social media for hospitality
  • Awareness of sustainability and environmental impact in hospitality
